FOR STUDENTS

WHAT ARE ACADEMIC SKILLS?

Our understanding of academic skills is defined by Tardy's (2009) theoretical framework and it involves formal knowledge, subject-matter knowledge, rhetorical knowledge, and process knowledge

  • Transferring skills among languages, including from L1-L2-L3, can be a skill and a resource as well as a challenge (Artemeva & Fox, 2010; Brent, 2011; Gentil, 2011; Haim, 2015; Jarvis & Pavlenko, 2008; Mein, 2012)

  • To reduce the challenge, students need to know that transfer at times needs to be adaptive, that is, students need to be aware of styles or aspects of the genre that do/do not transfer among different languages

HOW DO I TRANSFER MY ACADEMIC SKILLS FROM ONE LANGUAGE TO ANOTHER?

WHAT RESOURCES CAN I USE TO DEVELOP MY ACADEMIC SKILLS IN THREE LANGUAGES?

You have many resources at your disposal such as your educators, your university, the internet resources, and yourself.

  • Your educators: ask them to provide feedback on your writing in English, Kazakh, and/or Russian language. By constantly working on refining your written work, you will be able to reflect on your skills and develop them;

  • Your university: use library resources, consult international cooperation and academic mobility department for internship opportunities or academic exchanges, attend writing center (if any) to work on your academic writing skills, contact research committee to learn about publishing your research paper and its process;

  • The Internet: Purdue University Writing Center’s resources can help you learn how to avoid plagiarism and different citation and formatting styles for your academic writing https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/avoiding_plagiarism/index.html. You can also use Google Scholar or Mendeley, for example, to search for authors and research papers in your field/ topic.

  • Yourself: practice taking notes in different languages (e.g. English notes in a Russian-taught course), read research papers to get acquainted with its structure, language, and peculiarities, listen to lectures on your topic in different languages online.
